Mechanics Toolbox FAQ

Who is 'Mechanics Toolbox Insurance' suitable for?

This policy is designed for Motor Mechanics/Technicians working within the Motor Trade who keep their own toolbox at their place of work.

If you are a Mobile Mechanic or keep your toolbox at your home or other premises that is not your place of work this is NOT the policy for you – Sorry.

If I buy Toolbox insurance from you what will it cover?

Mechanics Toolbox Insurance from My Insurance Partner will cover your Portable Hand Tools and the actual toolbox they are kept in – this includes diagnostic tools that are kept within the toolbox.

We do not cover equipment that are not portable hand tools or any items that are not kept within the toolbox.

The policy provides cover for Theft (subject to violent and forcible entry or exit), Fire, Flood and Accidental Damage.

There is a £250 excess for each claim.

Doesn't my employer's insurance cover my toolbox?

Often not adequately if at all – but it is worth checking with your employer.

Motor Trade policies do not automatically include employees tools and even when they are included often the sum insured is not adequate.

Can I insure my Toolbox under my home insurance policy?

Your home insurance policy will not provide this cover if you are using your toolbox for your work and keeping it at your employer’s premises.

How do I select the amount to insure for?

The amount you should insure for is the cost of replacing all your portable hand tools and the toolbox itself with new items of the same specification.

You can choose from the following levels of cover £2,500, £5,000, £7,500, £10,000, £12,500, £15,000, £17,500 and £20,000. We can consider higher amounts on request.

It is important that the amount you select is adequate, if it is not you may not receive the full amount of any subsequent claim that you make.

Are there any special conditions or security requirements?

There are three important things to highlight to you

  1. Your toolbox must be anchored to the fabric of the building (when not in use).
  2. The toolbox must be locked when left unattended.
  3. It is a requirement that you send us a photograph of your toolbox and  photographs of the contents of each draw within 14 days of taking out the cover. These will help to confirm the tools that you have in the event that you need to make a claim.

Like all insurance there is a schedule and policy wording that detail the cover provided. It is always advisable to look at these.

How do claims work?

Should you need to claim all you need to do is call the claims telephone line.

You should have to hand:

  • Your policy information (reference numbers)
  • A brief outline of what has happened
  • Details of what you wish to claim for and the cost of replacing them

The insurer will review the circumstances against the cover selected and agree the next steps with you.

Once the claim has been agreed the insurer will issue payment to you for the replacement tools.
